We live about a five minute walk to downtown and a ten minute walk to Newport first beach in a beautiful old Victorian, many of them line the streets here. Of the three I think Portsmouth has the most beautiful homes, Middletown has most of the stores but is still very pretty and Newport has the downtown and waterfront that is the big draw, lots of great shops and restaurants and beautiful ocean views. Aquidneck Island has three towns, all beautiful but very different from each other, Newport, Middletown and Portsmouth. On some of the replies the geography is messed up. All of the navy housing is now low income housing.

People think it's full of only rich people when in fact along with the fabulously wealthy who live in ocean front mansions, it mostly middle class with quite a high concentration of very poor people. It's a beautiful walkable city with a split personality. Op my family has had a presence on the island for most of my life and my husband and I moved here full time in 2006. What part of OH are you from, OP? I know Columbus pretty well and might be able to draw analogies.

Watch Hill).Įxcept for the local historical stuff, which goes back almost four centuries, you'll have to go to Boston and New York for major cultural things, like museums and symphonies-though there's some of that in Providence. The western part of RI can feel the same, though it gets richer in the southwest near Connecticut (Westerly, esp. The area in Massachussetts to the north and east, before you get to Cape Cod, is depressed-reminds me of the little towns in upstate NY with remains of gloriously optimistic 19th-century main streets (case in point: Taunton, MA). A bridge from Jamestown leads west to Narragansett, also pleasant, and to 95. You won't find it the most thrilling and stimulating place, but I think it's highly livable in an upper-middle to upperclass suburban way.Īcross the water to the east are Portsmouth, Tiverton, and Little Compton, which are similarly well-endowed with shops and places to eat, but more rural. Sachuest wildlife reserve in Middletown, and spectacular ocean views from Newport and Middletown and Jamestown (on the island just west of Newport, over the toll bridge). Bristol (the next town north) is fairly cool, with a beach on the bay (Colt State Park) Cape Cod is about an hour's drive (two to Provincetown).

The area is fairly developed, but it's still easy to get a rural atmosphere. Middletown is a very quick drive into Newport a longer drive, close to an hour, to Providence, which has good restaurants and more of a night life. The east bay (from Newport and Middletown on up to Barrington) is the richest and nicest part of Rhode Island.
